In my work I push the boundaries of abstraction while holding on to figuration. The duality challenges me. I am not concerned with pretty pictures. My work goes deep inside to pull out emotional content and creative exploration. I often work with the figure. It is evocative and gives rise to spiritual embodiment which connects me to the painting and intensifies my desire to paint. I work in series. My animal series emerged at the end of a difficult period in my life. When that time was over, it was time to play. Creating my own animals engaged me with my imagination and moved my emotions forward. My ocean series had always been in me. Summers on the Jersey shore I would swim in the ocean, especially during a storm. It stirred powerful emotions in me, emotions different from walks in the beach. What is expressed in this series are those feelings: excitement, tumult, romance, and a favorite place of mine -- being on the edge. My Silence series was created pre-pandemic when the techie boom was spinning San Francisco so fast. This series provided a calm place to center and contemplate. I paint in multiple layers to create depth and richness of color. I paint in oil. Painting is the doorway to my interior life. It is an increasing awareness of that world that drives me to paint. ~~ Liz Fracchia |
